Pixie Junction::Fine Art Photography by Tarmo Peters

Pixie Junction Print

The original version of this photo was taken with an excellent point-and-shoot camera called the Panasonic LX3.  While it could not do as good a job as a big SLR, it did capture a lot of detail and rendered the “greenery” accurately.  Unfortunately the filtered light was all green meaning that the tree trunks and the leaves differed only slightly in hue.  To correct this, some experimentation in Photoshop was called for and it quickly became clear that something more interesting was achievable.

The emergence of magenta tones in the tree trunks coincided with a shift in the leaf colours to a more yellowy green which, when combined with an increase in contrast, resulted in an almost olive shade.  This was a relief from the unrelenting pure green of the original.  It also highlighted the fairytale aspect of the location.

"Pixie Junction" is magical and a nice place to "visit".  But while the picture was taken in the Don Valley in Toronto, the truth of the matter is that you can't get there from here.
