Not Quite Martian::Fine Art Photograph by Tarmo Peters
Not Quite Martian Print

There used to be an old riddle: what’s black and white and red (read) all over?  Answer: a newspaper.  With the pace of technological change, this riddle is probably unknown to most people under the age of forty.  That’s unfortunate because a newspaper is actually a creative wonder, given the number of people that make those creative choices about its layout and content every publishing day.

And then you have photographic manipulation where colour is isolated in a black-and-white image.  Same idea as colour ads in a mainly black-and-white newspaper: get (and try to hold) someone’s attention long enough to make a point.  So, what’s the point to this picture?

Actually, it’s no big deal - just a Canada thing.  Our flag is red and white.  And our red-jerseyed (sometimes) national hockey team whooshes around on a white ice background... beating everybody... most of the time....We also tend to be rather politically-correct, particularly in the big cities.  And it could be argued that creeping socialism is an issue.  But all things considered, the political landscape is not quite Martian.
