"Niagara Night Watch"print by Tarmo Peters
Niagara Night Watch

Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) is a pretty town on the south shore of Lake Ontario on the Canadian side.  During the day, from spring to fall, the streets are filled with hordes of tourists.  But by nighttime, many of them have climbed back into their cars and buses and disappeared.  What a relief!

This picture, taken in the fall just as the theatre season was coming to a close, shows a part of the main drag (Queen St.) the way most tourists will never see it - oddly empty, like something from the old Twilight Zone TV series.  A large photo of a woman's face in a storefront display shows her eyes keeping track of the solitary car driving through at around quarter to eleven.  Does she come alive after the tourists have gone?  Does the theatre of the macabre share this venue with the Shaw Festival?
