"Dark Days Cometh" photograph by Tarmo Peters
Dark Days Cometh

Taken on the same golden fall day as “Leaves a Trail”, this picture faced the same practical problems as that one: too much contrast and a paucity of colors other than the aforementioned gold.  And, as usual, the decision was to take a bright, uplifting and cheery image and turn it into something depressing and potentially malevolent.  Gloomy teenagers should love it.

Aside from the artist’s mental stability, the picture raises the question of whether the “dark days” are a reference to the approach of a sunless winter or something worse.  The use of a car in the distance travelling slowly up the street is a bit of a cinematic cliché, one that usually bodes no good.  And the blood red color in the leaf shadows isn’t symbolic of good times either.  Combined with the absence of people and the faint hint of detritus in the tree shadow, this picture could be the background for a poster promoting the next big summer movie, “Slashing Pod Zombies from Outer Space”.

Back in the real world, when viewed up close, the slabs of relatively flat color (e.g. the blue road and sidewalk) almost give this image a silk screen look.  In fact, more experimentation with tone reduction could be interesting.  Anyway, it’s one of our favorites and those of you who harbor dark recesses in your dark recesses should enjoy having it on your wall as well.
