Golden Split Blues
Here is another picture
that occupies the indistinct area between photography and painting.
It depicts a section of the Trent River in Ontario near the town of
Campbellford and was taken from a footbridge that crosses the gorge.
It’s admittedly not the most stunning or interesting composition.
But the three-way division of sky, land and water has a pleasing
symmetry and the colours are moderately stimulating.
So why should anyone
care?
This picture is best
viewed from a distance. But while it doesn’t have the kinds of
fascinating details seen in something like “Impending Spring” (see
crop at:
http://www.thewingthing.com/tarmo_images/Impending_Spring_crop.htm),
it is definitely worth looking at up close for the texture and
colour interactions. Not that this picture is a shining example of
it but these types of interactions can only be created by a computer
and only when guided by someone with an artistic mind and knowledge
of the tools.
Micro level appreciation may not be everyone’s
cup of tea but it does point to the potential for digital art: the
creation of something not seen before. From a distance it can look
ordinary and therefore the primary goal must still be compelling composition. But up close there may be another world of beauty that
could never be created by bristle brushes and oil paints. Printed
large enough (or viewed on a zoomed in monitor) this kind of art has
the potential to engage the imagination. In some respects, it
parallels our fascination with watching slow motion video of a
water-filled balloon breaking or a speeding bullet tearing through
the thin edge of a playing card: it’s a world we aren’t familiar
with.
